Andalucía |

|
| Andalucia is a large region which stretches across the south of
Spain. It is defined geographically by two east-west oriented
mountain ranges, the Sierra Morena and the Baetic Cordillera
(also called Sistema Penibético),
lying on either side of the Guadalquivir River Valley. A narrow
plain of Mediterranean coastline, the Andalucian plain, is found
here. Portions of Andalucia are very wet (Sierra de Grazalema,
in the southwest), and portions are very dry (deserts of
Almeria). Eight provinces make up Andalucia. Almeria, Cádiz,
Granada, Huelva and Málaga are the coastal provinces, while
Córdoba, Jaen and Seville are inland. |
| |
| The Andalusian Plain is essentially a wide
river valley through which the Río Guadalquivir flows. The river
broadens out along its course, reaching its widest point at the
Golfo de Cadiz. The Andalusian Plain is bounded on the north by
the Sierra Morena and on the south by the Sistema Penibético; it
narrows to an apex in the east where these two mountain chains
meet. |
| |
| The Sierra Morena is a mountain range which
stretches for 400 km East-West across southern Spain, forming
the border of the central plateau (Meseta Central) of Iberia,
and providing the watershed between the valleys of the Guadiana
to the north and the Guadalquivir to the south. It has valuable
deposits of lead, silver, mercury, and other metals, some of
which have been exploited since prehistoric times. The Sierra
Morena is the result of uplift produced by the pressure of the
northward-moving African Plate. Much of its natural beauty
is now protected in national parks, such as Despeñaperros,
Sierra de Andújar (Jaén), Sierra de Cardeña-Montoro, Sierra de
Hornachuelos, Sierra Madrona, Sierra Norte de Sevilla and Sierra
de Aracena Huelva. |
| |
| The Baetic Cordillera (also called Baetic
ranges, Baetic mountains, and Sistema Penibético) is a mountain
system stretching from Morocco, through the British territory of
Gibraltar and along the southern and eastern parts of Spain. The
Baetic Cordillera is made up of multiple mountain ranges that
reach from western Andalucia to Murcia and Valencia, trending
generally southwest-northeast. The Sierra Nevada, La Alpujarra
and the Aljibe Mountains of Andalucia are part of the Baetic
system. |
