Barbary Macaque
(Macaca sylvanus L.)

RANGE: The Barbary macaque is native to Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia.
It has also been introduced into Gibraltar, probably by the Moors.
In Northern Africa, this species is found in montane oak and cedar forests.

The Barbary macaque is actually a monkey,
it has just a stub for a tail, misleading some to think it is an ape species which it is not.

Within the Upper Rock Nature Reserve
there live five separate troops of apes.
Each is based around a feeding area or "Ape Den" such as this one.

Contact with large numbers of tourists
is causing the integrity of these social groups
to break down.

For this reason, feeding the apes is now an offence
punishable by a £300 fine
and all close contact with them is strongly discouraged.
