The babies are almost hairless at birth, and black, getting their
adult colouring at about 4 months.

Legend has it that the Rock of Gibraltar will remain under British rule
so long as Barbary apes survive here. So when they were wiped out by disease during the Second World War, they were reintroduced from the African mainland.

There are about 160 now on Gibraltar, which are fed
and looked after by the Gibraltar Government.

Although Barbary apes were once found throughout north Africa, there are now only 1,200-2,000 left in small areas, threatened by habitat destruction and hunting.
