During
World War 2 this was a mounting and track
for a huge gun used to guard the Straights of Gibraltar.

Europa
Point Lighthouse was built in 1841
and stands 49 metres above sea level.
The foundation stone was laid down
in 1834 by Sir Alexander Woodford
who was Governor at the time.
It has served as a very important beacon
for over a century guiding
vessels through the straits.
Its light ray is a powerful 3000 watt light bulb
which can be seen from 21 miles away on a clear night.
During heavy fog it can be seen for two miles away.
Europa
Point marks the southernmost point of Gibraltar
and indeed of Europe.
Africa is just 8 miles away.
