300 Years of British Rule !

the Honorary Freedom of the City of Gibraltar was granted to
The Royal Navy in recognition of their
300 years of service to this British colony.
|
At about 6:20 pm
Naval Officers and dignitaries started to assemble
at Alameda Grand Parade ground.
|

Terry Waite, an honored and respected guest. Terry Waite is the former special envoy to the Archbishop of Canterbury.
He was held captive by terrorists in Beirut from 1987 to 1991.

Terry Waite took part in a number of functions related to
Gibraltar’s Tercentenary. Mr. Waite, who believes that
‘less belligerence and a willingness to listen’ is the
solution to the conflict between Gibraltar and Spain, is a regular
leisure visitor to Gibraltar, and has accepted local invitations
to participate in the week’s festive events.
Mr. Waite described Gibraltar as a ‘unique’ place which, far
from celebrating just a military conquest, is rejoicing in 300
years of a people who have overcome cultural and ethnic
differences to succeed economically and socially. “If we value
democracy we ought to be able to listen to what the people want.
We ought to be aiming for better relations with Spain, less
belligerence and a willingness to listen.”
